Schatzi returns to normal

After a rough couple of weeks, Schatzi is acting normal.  We took her to a vet in Houston over the weekend, one with whom we had been consulting.  This vet has decided that Schatzi does not have anything wrong with her liver and will probably live a normal life span.  The new diagnosis is partial epilepsy.

At the dog park, no symptoms for 30 minutes

We took Schatzi to the dog park on Sunday.  Since the weather was so pleasant, there were about 30 dogs there.  She ran and played for half an hour and did not spaz one time!  No craning of the neck at all.  No spinning or acting weird.  Just a normal dog doing normal dog things.

As soon as we got her home, she started to crane her neck back about once per minute.  She doesn't want to sit in Connie's lap; instead she went under a low chair and hid out.

Saturday morning

Schatzi's had a rough week with her affliction, whatever it is, with more than usual isolating, craning and jerking her neck, etc.

However, when she is actively engaged with walk or play, her behavior seems normal . . .

Feb. 13th health update

As of three or four days ago now, Schatzi has been manifesting symptoms of her affliction, whatever it is.  The most obvious is the weird craning of the neck that has been recorded on this blog already.  That neck movement never really goes away completely; it is more evident sometimes, and less pronounced most of the time.

Over the past seven months or so, the craning of the neck has been less severe.  But a few days ago, it increased in frequency. Also, these other symptoms have gotten much worse:

  • Schatzi runs suddenly from one room to another, then slams to the floor in a curled-up ball
  • She dashes from one den to another, running from under a low chair to diving under the bed to under the computer desk, and so on
  • She spins around rapidly before suddenly settling down and then becomes unresponsive
  • She is more withdrawn and isolates in a distant room (usually Schatzi follows people around)

  • Today, Wednesday, Schatzi continues to spend most of the day sitting or lying in the guest bathroom (which she usually avoids) looking at the ground or craning her neck.  The vet has increased the Zonies to 150 mg per day.
